Book Description
Big Data and Information Theory are a binding force between various areas of knowledge that allow for societal advancement. Rapid development of data analytic and information theory allows companies to store vast amounts of information about production, inventory, service, and consumer activities. More powerful CPUs and cloud computing make it possible to do complex optimization instead of using heuristic algorithms, as well as instant rather than offline decision-making. The era of "big data" challenges includes analysis, capture, curation, search, sharing, storage, transfer, visualization, and privacy violations. Big data calls for better integration of optimization, statistics, and data mining. In response to these challenges this book brings together leading researchers and engineers to exchange and share their experiences and research results about big data and information theory applications in various areas. This book covers a broad range of topics including statistics, data mining, data warehouse implementation, engineering management in large-scale infrastructure systems, data-driven sustainable supply chain network, information technology service offshoring project issues, online rumors governance, preliminary cost estimation, and information system project selection. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal, International Journal of Management Science and Engineering Management.

Book Description
Recent Advances in System Reliability discusses developments in modern reliability theory such as signatures, multi-state systems and statistical inference. It describes the latest achievements in these fields, and covers the application of these achievements to reliability engineering practice. The chapters cover a wide range of new theoretical subjects and have been written by leading experts in reliability theory and its applications. The topics include: concepts and different definitions of signatures (D-spectra), their properties and applications to reliability of coherent systems and network-type structures; Lz-transform of Markov stochastic process and its application to multi-state system reliability analysis; methods for cost-reliability and cost-availability analysis of multi-state systems; optimal replacement and protection strategy; and statistical inference. Recent Advances in System Reliability presents many examples to illustrate the theoretical results. Real world multi-state systems, such as power generation and transmission, refrigeration, and production systems, are considered in the form of case studies, making the book a useful resource for researchers and postgraduate students.

Book Description
This book covers an extensive class of models involving inhomogeneous Poisson processes and deals with their identification, i.e. the solution of certain estimation or hypothesis testing problems based on the given dataset. These processes are mathematically easy-to-handle and appear in numerous disciplines, including astronomy, biology, ecology, geology, seismology, medicine, physics, statistical mechanics, economics, image processing, forestry, telecommunications, insurance and finance, reliability, queuing theory, wireless networks, and localisation of sources. Beginning with the definitions and properties of some fundamental notions (stochastic integral, likelihood ratio, limit theorems, etc.), the book goes on to analyse a wide class of estimators for regular and singular statistical models. Special attention is paid to problems of change-point type, and in particular cusp-type change-point models, then the focus turns to the asymptotically efficient nonparametric estimation of the mean function, the intensity function, and of some functionals. Traditional hypothesis testing, including some goodness-of-fit tests, is also discussed. The theory is then applied to three classes of problems: misspecification in regularity (MiR),corresponding to situations where the chosen change-point model and that of the real data have different regularity; optical communication with phase and frequency modulation of periodic intensity functions; and localization of a radioactive (Poisson) source on the plane using K detectors. Each chapter concludes with a series of problems, and state-of-the-art references are provided, making the book invaluable to researchers and students working in areas which actively use inhomogeneous Poisson processes.
