Book Description
Annual collection on diverse aspects of the fifteenth century, with an emphasis on manuscripts and manuscript culture. The fifteenth century defies consensus on fundamental issues; most scholars agree, however, that the period outgrew the Middle Ages, that it was a time of transition and a passage to modern times. Fifteenth-Century Studiesoffers essays on diverse aspects of the period, including liberal and fine arts, historiography, medicine, and religion. Essays within this thirty-sixth volume treat a wide range of topics: the importance of manuscript culture as reflected in Cárcel de amor; the wanderings of René d'Anjou and Olivier de la Marche as reflected in literary texts; the art of compiling in Jean de Bueil's Jouvencel; a diplomatic transcription of Princeton MS153 (reception and compilation practices of the Rose); historical approaches in the chronicles of Jean le Bel and Jean Froissart; the Fairfax Sequence in Bodleian MS Fairfax 16; anticlerical critique in the Croxton Playof the Sacrament; the Chester cycle of mystery plays; the conquering Turk in Carnival Nürnberg: Hans Rosenplüt's Des Turken Vasnachtspil; and Tolkien's eucatastrophe and Malory's Morte Darthur. Book reviews conclude the volume. Contributors: Ethan Campbell, Emily C. Francomano, D. Thomas Hanks, Jr., Theodore K. Lerud, John Moreau, Gerald Nachtwey, Mariana Neilly, Marco Nievergelt, Michelle Szkilnik, Martin W. Walsh. Barbara I. Book Description
It is equally true that the Reformation was inspired and defined by the Bible and that the Bible was reshaped by the intellectual, political, and cultural forces of the Reformation. In this book, a distinguished scholar--whose contributions to the field of religious studies have won him wide renown--explores this relationship, examining both the role of the Bible in the Reformation and the effect of the Reformation on the text of the Bible, Biblical studies, preaching and exegesis, and European culture in general. Jaroslav Pelikan begins by discussing the philological foundations of the "reformation" of the Biblical text, focusing on the revival of Greek and Hebrew language study and the important contributions to textual criticism by humanist scholars. He then examines the changing patterns of interpretation and communication of the Biblical text, the proliferation of vernacular versions of scripture and their impact on various national cultures, and the impact of the Reformation Bible on art, music, and literature of the period. The book is richly illustrated with examples of early printed editions of Bibles, commentaries, sermons, vernacular translations, and other works with Biblical themes, all of which are identified and discussed. The book serves as the catalog for a major exhibition of early Bibles and Reformation texts that has been organized at Bridwell Library, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, and will also be shown at the Yale Center for British Art, the Houghton Library and the Widener Library at Harvard University, and the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University.

Book Description
Of the articles in this volume, eight concern a world-famous author (François Rabelais); the others are studies of little-known authors (Cortesi, Corrozet, Mercier) or genres (the joke, the apophthegm). The common theme, in all but one, is humour: how it was defined, and how used, by orators and humanists but also by court jesters, princes, peasants and housewives. Though neglected by historians, this subject was of crucial importance to writers as different as Luther, Erasmus, Thomas More and François Rabelais. The book is divided into four sections. 'Humanist Wit' concerns the large and multi-lingual corpus of Renaissance facetiae. The second and third parts focus on French humanist humour, Rabelais in particular, while the last section is titled '"Serious" Humanists' because humour is by no means absent from it. For the Renaissance, as Erasmus and Rabelais amply demonstrate, and as the 'minor' authors studied here confirm, wit, whether affectionate or bitingly satirical, can coexist with, and indeed be inseparable from, serious purpose. Rabelais, as so often, said it best: 'Rire est le propre de l'homme.'
