In der alten griechischen Tragodie so ist etwa der Gedankengang Wedekinds etebu die Haupt figuren fast immer auerhalb des N aturlichen. Und diesen Tantalidenfluch tragt in seinem Stuck die Grafin Geschwitz mit sich herum. Die Grafin Geschwitz, die ein unnaturlich verkehrtes Triebleben zu den eigenen Gesehlechtsgenossinnen hindrangt, ist die eigentliche Heldin eine Verfluchte, eine Verdorrte, in deren Psychologie W. Eine eigene Meisterschaft errungen. "sie wird durch den Gang der Handlung zu dem Versuch gezwungen, das auf ihr lastende furchtbare Verhangnis der Unnaturlicbkeit unter Aufbietung aller seelischen Energie zu uberwinden, worauf sie im dritten Akt, nachdem sie die entsetzlichsten Seelenqualen mit stoischer Fassung ertragen, als Verteidigerin ihrer Freundin den Opfertod stirbt. Der Tragikomiker erstrebt aber auch daruber hinaus noch als hoheres Ziel eine moralische reinigende Wirkung durch Furcht und Mitleid. "mich beseelte der Trieb, die gewaltige menschliche Tragik auergewohnlich groer, vollig fruchtloser Seelenkampfe dem Geschick der Lacherlichkeit zu entreien und sie der Teilnahme und der Barmherzigkeit aller nicht von ihr Betroffenen naher zu bringen. Als eines der wirk samsten Mittel zur Erreichung dieses Ziels schien es mir notig, das niedrige Gespott und das gellende Hohngelachter, das der ungebildete Mensch fur diese Tragik bereit hat, in einer mog lichst ausdrucksvollen Form zu verkorpern. Der Betroffene ist also der Kraftmensch Rodrigo Quast, gegen dessen gellendes Hohn gelachter die Tendenz des Stuckes gerichtet ist. Wir unter scheiden das asthetische Ziel und die moralische Wirkung, die Wedekind nach seinen eigenen, im Vorwort vom l. Mai 1906 aus gesprochenen Worten bezweckt.
