Book Description
This “classic compilation” (The Field) of newspaper death notices “includes the great, the brave, the adventurous, and the eccentric” (Soldier Magazine). Part of the unique series compiled by Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, this volume collects one hundred recent obituaries of military figures. Some have been celebrated for their great heroism and involvement in major operations, while others have extraordinary stories barely remembered even by their families. Those featured include Pte. Harry Patch, the last survivor of those who went “over the top” on the Western Front in 1917; Lt. Col. Colonel Eric Wilson of the Somaliland Camel Corps, who learned he had been awarded a “posthumous” Victoria Cross in a prison camp; and Col. Clive Fairweather, who organized the SAS attack on the terrorists who seized the Iranian embassy in London in 1980. These tributes and miniature biographies make fascinating reading for those interested in history and the military. As Andrew Roberts wrote of the first collection: “They evoke swirling, profound, even guilty emotions. . . . To those Britons who have known only peace, these are thought provoking and humbling essays in valor.”

Book Description
Following on from the great success of the first volume, the paperback of which is still in print, the Daily Telegraph's chief obituary writer has assembled another one hundred pithy insights into a plethora of fascinating lives, all published in the newspaper since 2000. This second collection bears eloquent testimony to the gallant qualities shown by our soldiers. It includes such Victoria Cross holders as the Gurkha Ganju Lama and the tank commander Pip Gardener; Major-General "Bala" Bredin, who refused to wear a helmet yet won three DSOs and two MCs; and the Brigadier David Block, the deadly accurate gunner at Monte Cassino. But although most of the actions described occurred in the Second World War, Warrant Officer "Muscles" Strong proved a tower of strength to the 1917 cavalry charge at Huj in the Sinai Desert; and the doctor Major Vanessa Lloyd-Davies dismissed the danger of being under fire in Bosnia in 1993 by saying she had faced worse when riding hard with the Quorn Hunt in Leicestershire. As Andrew Roberts wrote of the first collection: 'They evoke swirling, profound, even guilty emotions ... To those Britons who have known only peace, these are thought provoking and humbling essays in valor.'

Book Description
This unusual book, the world of obituaries looks at obituaries as a rich source of information on cultural representation of gender. It examines obituaries published from 1938 to 1998 in three cultures - Egypt, Iran, and the United States - to analysis how women and men are represented in their death notices and how these representations have change over time. It also shows how obituaries, viewed as texts, at times converge within but often diverge from expected norms. Mushira Eid has applied quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques to 4,400 obituaries, using names, titles, and occupations as linguistic symbols of identity. Data were collected for a month at ten-year intervals to measure change. From them, she demonstrates differences within the world of obituaries, relates this world to the world at large, and constructs a model based on this comparison. Resulting facts are placed within the context of women's movements in the three cultures and other sociocultural and political events that influenced the perception of gender roles. The World of Obituaries offers a unique synthesis of information on women and public space in three cultures. It opens a new window on gende

Book Description
In the seventeen years since The Daily Telegraph started to take its obituaries seriously by allotting them a special section in the paper, it has published around 1,000 obituaries of soldiers, as well as almost equal numbers of sailors and airmen. The 100 to be found here, which have never before been collected in book form, were chosen to show the widest range of military experience. They include those who performed astonishing acts of bravery, such as the New Zealander Charles Upham, who won the Victoria Cross twice in Crete and North Africa, the commando leader "Mad Jack" Churchill and Drum Major Buss, the bugler who rallied the Glosters at the Imjin River in Korea. Among the senior figures are General Mazek, who commanded the Poles in Normandy, the rigorous Field Marshal Lord Carver and General Sir Walter Walker, who won three DSOs.

Book Description
North Carolina sent more than 125,000 men and boys to fight the Civil War. It is estimated that about 40,000 lost their lives on the battlefield or by disease. Most were sent home for burial in family plots or community churchyards but thousands could not be identified or could not be transported and were interred in unmarked graves across the country. Many never had an obituary published. Others had obituaries that included directions to the deceased's final resting place. This compilation of obituaries from North Carolina newspapers documents the date and cause of death for hundreds of soldiers, with many providing place of burial, surviving relatives, last words, accounts by comrades and details of military service.

Book Description
This new handbook is about the practices of conducting research on military issues. As an edited collection, it brings together an extensive group of authors from a range of disciplinary perspectives whose chapters engage with the conceptual, practical and political questions raised when doing military research. The book considers a wide range of questions around research about, on and with military organisations, personnel and activities, from diverse starting-points across the social sciences, arts and humanities. Each chapter in this volume: Describes the nature of the military research topic under scrutiny and explains what research practices were undertaken and why. Discusses the author's research activities, addressing the nature of their engagement with their subjects and explaining how the method or approach under scrutiny was distinctive because of the military context or subject of the research. Reflects on the author’s research experiences, and the specific, often unique, negotiations with the politics and practices of military institutions and military personnel before, during and after their research fieldwork. The book provides a focussed overview of methodological approaches to critical studies of military personnel and institutions, and processes and practices of militarisation and militarism. In particular, it engages with the growth in qualitative approaches to military research, particularly research carried out on military topics outside military research institutions. The handbook provides the reader with a comprehensive guide to how critical military research is being undertaken by social scientists and humanities scholars today, and sets out suggestions for future approaches to military research. This book will be of much interest to students of military studies, war and conflict studies, and research methods in general.
