Dennoch ist es sinnvoll, von einer medial reflexiven Literatur erst seit dem audiovisuellen Jahrhundert zu sprechen, dem des Films. Medientransformationen sind seitdem nicht allein paradigmatische Wechsel der Systeme, sondern auch Vervielfältigungen durch die Pluralität der medialen Träger. Neben allgemeineren Fragestellungen und theoretischen Bestimmungen steht das Wechselverhältnis von Text, Bild und Musik im Zentrum detaillierter Untersuchungen. Der intermedialen Performanz ist ein weiterer Teil des Bandes gewidmet, der schließlich die Brücke zu Film und Fernsehen schlägt. Das Buch geht zurück auf eine bilaterale Tagung in Ithaca, NY, an der Cornell University. Partner und Mitveranstalter war die Universität Bremen. Hinzu kamen in Fragen der Inter- und Transmedialität einschlägig ausgewiesene Wissenschaftler aus den USA und aus Deutschland. Enthalten sind vierzehn Beiträge in deutscher und sechs in englischer Sprache. Vereint werden ganz unterschiedliche Positionen der amerikanischen und europäischen Intermedialitätsforschung. Gerade diese Heterogenität ist eine Stärke der vorliegenden Publikation. Zusätzlich liefern die Herausgeber eine neuartige Kategorisierung und Begrifflichkeit und bedienen so ein weiter steigendes Interesse in den Literatur-, Medien- und Kulturwissenschaften. This book's goal is to determine the significance of visual culture in the production of contemporary poetry and to sound out the insights poetry might generate into contemporary visual culture. Its main hypothesis is that poetry holds considerable potential for (post-)digital language, image, and media criticism. The visual dimensions of recent poetry encompass, for instance, kinetic writing in digital poetry, visual elements in social media poems, and (spoken and written) text-image interactions in poetry films as well as in book poetry. The articles examine these medial correlations and their political implications by asking how visual culture is applied, exposed, and debated in poetry. This volume brings together contributions by authors from various countries working in disciplines such as literary, media, and film studies, linguistics, cultural and visual culture studies, and in poetic practice. An incisive analysis of contemporary crime film in Brazil, this book focuses on how movies in this genre represent masculinity and how their messages connect to twenty-first-century sociopolitical issues. Jeremy Lehnen argues that these films promote an agenda in support of the nation’s recent swing toward authoritarianism that culminated in the 2018 election of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. Lehnen examines the integral role of masculinity in several archetypal crime films, most of which foreground urban violence, including Cidade de Deus, Quase Dois Irmãos, Tropa de Elite, O Homem do Ano, and O Doutrinador. Within these films, Lehnen finds representations that criminalize the poor, marginalized male; emasculate the civilian middle-class male intellectual, casting him as unable to respond to crime; and portray state security as the only power able to stem increasing crime rates. Drawing on insights from masculinity studies, Lehnen contends that Brazilian crime films are ideologically charged mediums that assert and normalize the presence of the neo-authoritarian male within society. This book demonstrates how gendered scripts can become widely accepted by audiences and contribute to very real power structures beyond the sphere of cinema.
