Book Description
A thought-provoking argument that consciousness—more widespread than previously assumed—is the feeling of being alive, not a type of computation or a clever hack In The Feeling of Life Itself, Christof Koch offers a straightforward definition of consciousness as any subjective experience, from the most mundane to the most exalted—the feeling of being alive. Psychologists study which cognitive operations underpin a given conscious perception. Neuroscientists track the neural correlates of consciousness in the brain, the organ of the mind. But why the brain and not, say, the liver? How can the brain—three pounds of highly excitable matter, a piece of furniture in the universe, subject to the same laws of physics as any other piece—give rise to subjective experience? Koch argues that what is needed to answer these questions is a quantitative theory that starts with experience and proceeds to the brain. In The Feeling of Life Itself, Koch outlines such a theory, based on integrated information. Koch describes how the theory explains many facts about the neurology of consciousness and how it has been used to build a clinically useful consciousness meter. The theory predicts that many, and perhaps all, animals experience the sights and sounds of life; consciousness is much more widespread than conventionally assumed. Contrary to received wisdom, however, Koch argues that programmable computers will not have consciousness. Even a perfect software model of the brain is not conscious. Its simulation is fake consciousness. Consciousness is not a special type of computation—it is not a clever hack. Consciousness is about being.

Book Description
The idea of Changing the World can be overwhelming because admittedly the world is a pretty big place, but every single action you take that may seem insignificant in your eyes can make a world of difference in someone elses. This book is meant to be a guide and an example of how one family became the change they wished to see. How finding purpose can create happiness, and how as parents we have the opportunity to guide our children towards this. There was never one specific moment in our lives when we realized our need to help others; it was more a series of events that compiled over time, drawing our attention to the issues plaguing the world. These moments, so small, and yet so significant, brought us to where we are today. Moments like Samantha, at the age of eight, learning that our young friend living in another country had no juice to drink to help her emotionally recover from a life-threatening surgery, while our fridge at home was stocked with multiple different flavours. Or Hailey, at age thirteen, coming home from a charity event, devastated that children her age were not able to attend school, while she loved and valued it so much. Or even a young Kathy, defending her kid brother from prowling bullies in the schoolyard. We hope this book provides you with insights and ideas on how to change the world one child at a time by raising socially conscious children who love their lives.

Book Description
Family, relationships, loss, and grief Dealing with changes throughout life in our own way, through faith and spirituality When you lose a child, the world stands still. The birds no longer sing, the sun no longer shines. You feel as though you are alone, even in a room full of people. Grief is a terrible five-letter word. It ’s easier to climb a mountain than to get past grief unscathed. Kathy deals with the grief and with the loss that was the cause of the grief. She has learned to live with the grief but under her terms. It is her passionate hope this book can shed some light on the ways that you can conquer grief, kick it to the curb, and create a new life filled with love, peace, and joy. Kathy and her husband have been married since 1970. They have raised five children: a police officer, a fireman, a master plumber, and an accountant. One son is in spirit. They have five grandchildren and one great-grandson. My Dragonfly My Dragonfly represents the son they lost to drug addiction in September of 2012. Kathy has written My Dragonfly to help others who have lost children, to let them know that their life matters, and to help them find the healing they need to feel whole again. If this book helps just one person or one mother who has lost a child, then it was well worth writing. Learning to live a conscious life has helped Kathy to move toward her goals of manifesting her true life path and helping others who may be searching for meaning in their lives.

Book Description
Conscious Living Made Easy will guide you to living a full and rewarding life, a life without regret. It will help you to take control and responsibility for living life in the present, appreciating life as you live it and to set a realistic path in life for yourself. It will guide you to examining your beliefs and integrate those most beneficial to your path into your spirituality. Part of conscious living is to acknowledge that death will come. As children, we think we are immortal. Even as we get older, we think it is someone else that will die, not us. Our death is far off and we have plenty of time to do whatever we want. To live consciously is to accept that death is a part of life and plan for it, while not allowing it to dominate our life at any age. Bob Southard, after his own near death encounter, shares his experience and offers his thoughts, beliefs and meditations to help you plan for and live life in a conscious way.
