As soon as we leave our private sphere, we are surrounded by a multitude of written messages in various shapes and forms: billboards, shop names, regulatory signs ('STOP'), memorial plaques, messages on clothing, graffiti and many others. In short, we enter a 'Linguistic Landscape' (LL). Language in the public space, however, often follows very different patterns from most other written texts. It tends to be, for example, syntactically simple, pragmatically right to the point, highly creative, visually oriented and multilingual. LL studies are still a fairly young discipline, with an unsettled research agenda and many questions still open. This introduction approaches language in the public space from a wide variety of linguistic perspectives. It covers some of the well-established topics like multilingualism and aspects of semiotics, but goes far beyond them. Features studied include names, writing systems, grammar, dialect and potential applications for language teaching. Each of the main chapters concludes with a series of questions for reflection or independent research as well as a number of suggestions for further reading. Two hundred b/w photographs provide rich illustration. - Holger Schmitt is a linguist (MA, PhD, Habilitation) who taught English Linguistics at various German universities (Koblenz-Landau, Bonn, Karlsruhe, Wuppertal, Konstanz). This book looks closely at Yi bilingual education practice in the southwest of China from an educationalist’s perspective and, in doing so, provides an insight toward our understanding of minority language maintenance and bilingual education implementation in China. The book provides an overview on the Yi people since 1949, their history, society, culture, customs and languages. Adopting the theory of language ecology, data was collected among different Yi groups and case studies were focused on Yi bilingual schools. The topic of sexuality and gender within the South Asian context is timely and widely discussed across a variety of academic disciplines. Since the end of the last century, there have been debates in the cultural sphere in India on issues concerning Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender people’s rights, gender, sex workers’ rights and caste. There has also been an explicit visibility for sexuality in the form of discussion around intimate scenes in films, advertisements and moral concerns around pre-marital heterosexual relationships and same-sex relationships. This book brings out the modalities through which explicit visibility of sexuality gets constituted in the public space of India after the 1990s. The specificities through which relations of gender/ sexuality and caste get constituted and performed in regional media provide significant entry points to an understanding of larger structures and the ever-present fissures through which these larger structures emerge. Focussing on the southern state of Kerala, the book investigates women’s sexuality and caste through a number of case studies: the Suryanelli rape case, neology in the media and the debates around the life narratives of Nalini Jameela, a sex worker. The book does not stop at representational practices as it also looks at the negotiations between the subject and her represented figures which is a significant addition to the existing body of work in the field of media and gender studies. Onomastics in Contemporary Public Space aims at analysing names and name-giving from an intercultural perspective, within the context of contemporary public space. As was the case of Name and Naming: Synchronic and Diachronic Perspectives (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2012), the geographical areas investigated in the studies included in this volume are very diverse, referring not only to European cultural space, but also to American, Asian, African and Australian contexts. Being a collective work, the book brings together 49 specialists from 18 countries; namely Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and the USA. Thematically, the volume is organised so that it may cover all the dimensions of public space, as far as onomastics is concerned. The specific areas studied are: the theory of names; names of public places (linguistic landscapes); names of public, economic, cultural, religious and sports institutions (names of business establishments, religious institutions – places of worship – and cultural associations, as well as names in journals and magazines); names of objects/entities resulting from various processes in public space (names of foods, drinks and food brands, code names of collaborators in secret service organisations, names in literature, nicknames/bynames/pseudonyms in the world of politics, high life, art and sport, names in virtual space, and zoonyms); and miscellanea.
