Book Description
Excerpt from History of Amherst College During Its First Half Century, 1821-1871 This History was a part of the plan for the Semi-Centennial Celebration, and was at first intended to be in readiness for that occasion. The action of the Alumni and of the Trustees on the subject is narrated at the opening of the chapter touching the Jubilee, and may be found at page 595. The failure of the author's health rendered it necessary for him to defer the work for some time, and seek recuperation; and although by rest, with change of scene, this object was at length successfully accomplished, yet between the necessity of carefully guarding what was thus gained, and the daily occupation of College duties, he has been able to devote only a short time, two or three hours a day at most, to this extra labor. After the work of preparation was substantially done, unexpected delays, which need not be detailed, arose in regard to the publication. Prepared at the request of the Alumni and dedicated to them, the History has been written with constant reference to them as its most sympathizing and probably most numerous readers. Some of the best parts of it have been contributed by the Alumni themselves. A circular was sent to each Alumnus, at the outset, requesting him to "photograph for the author's use the College as it was in his day, his own class, any individual whether officer or student, any scene or event as it appeared to his eye." Book Description
In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Amherst College, a group of scholars and alumni explore the school’s substantial past in this volume. Amherst in the World tells the story of how an institution that was founded to train Protestant ministers began educating new generations of industrialists, bankers, and political leaders with the decline in missionary ambitions after the Civil War. The contributors trace how what was a largely white school throughout the interwar years begins diversifying its student demographics after World War II and the War in Vietnam. The histories told here illuminate how Amherst has contended with slavery, wars, religion, coeducation, science, curriculum, town and gown relations, governance, and funding during its two centuries of existence. Through Amherst’s engagement with educational improvement in light of these historical undulations, it continually affirms both the vitality and the utility of a liberal arts education. Contributions by Martha Saxton, Gary J. Kornblith, David W. Wills, Frederick E. Hoxie, Trent Maxey, Nicholas L. Syrett, Wendy H. Bergoffen, Rick López, Matthew Alexander Randolph, Daniel Levinson Wilk, K. Ian Shin, David S. Reynolds, Jane F. Thrailkill, Julie Dobrow, Richard F. Teichgraeber III, Debby Applegate, Michael E. Jirik, Bruce Laurie, Molly Michelmore, and Christian G. Appy.

Book Description
In the spring of 1995, prayer and the Spirit of God wrought great changes in the halls of academia. Through a series of revivals which began at Baptist churches in Brownwood and Santa Anna, Texas, God moved across the face of American campuses. From Texas to Minnesota, from Massachusetts to Oregon, lives were touched and schools and churches were turned upside down. While focusing on Wheaton College, this book chronicles the events as they affected many schools and students. You will find here the characteristics of revivals and a history of campus awakenings. You will read firsthand accounts of how the Wheaton revival affected students and how it spread to other campuses and churches. This touching report gives readers a glimpse of what happens when God's spirit moves in a dramatic way among His people.
