Gateways to Understanding Music explores music in all the categories that constitute contemporary musical experience: European classical music, popular music, jazz, and world music. Covering the oldest forms of human music making to the newest, the chronological narrative considers music from a global rather than a Eurocentric perspective. Each of sixty modular "gateways" covers a particular genre, style, or period of music. Every gateway opens with a guided listening example that unlocks a world of music through careful study of its structural elements. Based on their listening experience, students are asked to consider how the piece came to be composed or performed, how the piece or performance responded to the social and cultural issues at the time and place of its creation, and what that music means today. Amin Amer’s 1999 study of the Gateway of Ramesses IX at Karnak, Egypt, is presented here in a facsimile reissue. The Gateway is a little-known major work, part of the great temple at Karnak, built by one of the last kings of the Egyptian empire after a long period that saw little building work in the temple complex. The rather modest, by Karnak’s standards, construct lies at the northern end of the court ‘of the Cachette’, north of Pylon VII, and leads into the southern end of the narrow court of Pylons III and IV, presenting an impressive entrance to the main temple of Amun. A prominent stela of Ramesses IX and Amun lies beyond it. The Gateway was part of a building programme, decorated with statues and building-texts, undertaken by the high priest Amenhotep who clearly sought to emphasise the importance of the contributions of the king and himself to the temple and worship of Amun. A brief introduction to the works of Ramasses IX at Karnak is followed by a detailed description of the scenes adorning the Gateway with a translation of the inscriptions and a discussion of the role of the Gateway and its decoration. The descriptions are accompanied by drawings of the hieroglyphic texts and photographs and line drawings of the entire gateway and its facade.

This book consists of eight chapters, five of which provide a summary of the tutorials and workshops organised as part of the cHiPSet Summer School: High-Performance Modelling and Simulation for Big Data Applications Cost Action on “New Trends in Modelling and Simulation in HPC Systems,” which was held in Bucharest (Romania) on September 21–23, 2016. As such it offers a solid foundation for the development of new-generation data-intensive intelligent systems. Modelling and simulation (MS) in the big data era is widely considered the essential tool in science and engineering to substantiate the prediction and analysis of complex systems and natural phenomena. MS offers suitable abstractions to manage the complexity of analysing big data in various scientific and engineering domains. Unfortunately, big data problems are not always easily amenable to efficient MS over HPC (high performance computing). Further, MS communities may lack the detailed expertise required to exploit the full potential of HPC solutions, and HPC architects may not be fully aware of specific MS requirements. The main goal of the Summer School was to improve the participants’ practical skills and knowledge of the novel HPC-driven models and technologies for big data applications. The trainers, who are also the authors of this book, explained how to design, construct, and utilise the complex MS tools that capture many of the HPC modelling needs, from scalability to fault tolerance and beyond. In the final three chapters, the book presents the first outcomes of the school: new ideas and novel results of the research on security aspects in clouds, first prototypes of the complex virtual models of data in big data streams and a data-intensive computing framework for opportunistic networks.
