Book Description
The book covers some problems of fracture of solids with linear or penny-shaped cracks or rigid inclusions. The analysis of the interaction of a macrocrack with small defects or microcracks in the frame of linear fracture mechanics is the main topic of the book. The problem of the interaction of the macrocrack with microcracks has been intensively studied for almost two decades. One of the pioneering papers was published in 1984 by the authors of the present book. In the frame of linear elasticity a problem of interaction of the cracks, holes, or inclusions most often has been reduced to a system of singular integral equations. Although exact solutions to the system of singular integral equations. Although exact solutions to the system of singular integral equations exist in a few special cases, the problem, in general, is solved by various asymptotic methods. The series solution over a small parameter representing the ratio of the linear sizes of the microcrack to the macrocrack was first obtained by Tamuzs and Romalis in 1984. It was hown that the two dominant terms in the stress Intensity Factor (SIF) at the tip of the macrocrack do not depend on mutual interaction of the microcracks and only depend on the interaction of the macrocrack with arrays of small defects. This method is applied to various macrocrack-microdefect interaction problems of 2-D and 3-D elasticity and thermoelasticity. A review of other approached to the problem is given at the end of the book.

Book Description
This book stems from a course on Micromechanics that I started about fifteen years ago at Northwestern University. At that time, micromechanics was a rather unfamiliar subject. Although I repeated the course every year, I was never convinced that my notes have quite developed into a final manuscript because new topics emerged constantly requiring revisions, and additions. I finally came to realize that if this is continued, then I will never complete the book to my total satisfaction. Meanwhile, T. Mori and I had coauthored a book in Japanese, entitled Micromechanics, published by Baifu-kan, Tokyo, in 1975. It received an extremely favorable response from students and re searchers in Japan. This encouraged me to go ahead and publish my course notes in their latest version, as this book, which contains further development of the subject and is more comprehensive than the one published in Japanese. Micromechanics encompasses mechanics related to microstructures of materials. The method employed is a continuum theory of elasticity yet its applications cover a broad area relating to the mechanical behavior of materi als: plasticity, fracture and fatigue, constitutive equations, composite materi als, polycrystals, etc. These subjects are treated in this book by means of a powerful and unified method which is called the 'eigenstrain method. ' In particular, problems relating to inclusions and dislocations are most effectively analyzed by this method, and therefore, special emphasis is placed on these topics.

Book Description
An International Symposium on Defects and Fracture was held in Tuczno, Poland, 13-17 October 1980 under the sponsorship of the Polish Academy of Sci ences and Institute of Fracture and Solid Mechanics, Lehigh University. Profes sor H. Zorski of the Academy and Professor G. C. Sih of Lehigh University were Co-Chairmen. The idea for the Symposium was initiated by the members of the Organizing Committee: G. C. Sih (Co-Chairman), H. Zorski (Co-Chairman), M. Matczynski (Secretary), D. R. Axelrad, R. Bullough, J. W. Provan and R. deWit. With the rapid development of high performance materials and their increasing use in vital structural applications, there is a need for a more in-depth under standing of the fundamentals associated with material behavior and failure. Al though this topic encompasses a wide range of disciplines, it is appropriate to narrow the discussion to material failures initiating from inherent, unavoidable defects or cracks. A balanced coverage of analysis and physics was achieved by inviting speakers with backgrounds in applied mechanics and solid state physics. The input was limited to a small group of specialists who had the opportunity to discuss not only past progress but also ideas for future research.

Book Description
This volume presents recent developments in the theory of defects and the mechanics of material forces. The book constitutes a selection of the contributions presented at the International Symposium on Defect and Material Mechanics (ISDMM2011), held inSeville,Spain, June 2011. The ISDMM series of symposia provides a rare and much needed forum for bringing together a diverse group of researchers from various areas ranging from theoretical, experimental and computational modeling of the mechanics of materials. The present volume constitutes a valuable snapshot of the field of the mechanics of materials and their defects, and a window to its many accomplishments, challenges and opportunities, and open questions. The volume is intended to motivate the young research community interested in the field. Reprinted from International Journal of Fracture, Vol. 174:1 (2012)

Book Description
The Second International Symposium on Defects, Fracture and Fatigue took place at Mont Gabriel, Quebec, Canada, May 30 to June 5, 1982, and was organized by the Mechanical Engineering Department of McGill University and Institute of Fracture and Solid Mechanics, Lehigh University. The Co-Chairmen of the Sympo sium were Professor G.C. Sih of Lehigh University and Professor J.W. Provan of McGill University. Among those who served on the Organizing Committee were G.C. Sih (Co-Chairman), J.W. Provan (Co-Chairman), H. Mughrabi, H. Zorski, R. Bullough, M. Matczynski, G. Barenblatt and G. Caglioti. As a result of the interest expressed at the First Symposium that was held in October 1980, in Po land, the need for a follow-up meeting to further explore the phenomena of mate rial damage became apparent. Among the areas considered were dislocations, per sistent-slip-bands, void creation, microcracking, microstructure effects, micro/ macro fracture mechanics, ductile fracture criteria, fatigue crack initiation and propagation, stress and failure analysis, deterministic and statistical crack models, and fracture control. This wide spectrum of topics attracted researchers and engineers in solid state physics, continuum mechanics, applied mathematics, metallurgy and fracture mechanics from many different countries. This spectrum is also indicative of the interdisciplinary character of material damage that must be addressed at the atomic, microscopic and macroscopic scale level.

Book Description
Cracks and Fracture consists of nine chapters in logical sequence. In two introductory chapters, physical processes in the vicinity of the crack edge are discussed and the fracture process is described. Chapter 3 develops general basic concepts and relations in crack mechanics, such as path independent integrals, stress intensity factors and energy flux into the crack edge region. Chapters 4-7 deal with elastostatic cracks, stationary or slowly moving elastic-plastic cracks, elastodynamic crack mechanics and elastoplastic aspects of fracture, including dynamic fracture mechanics. Appendices include general formulae, the basic theory of analytic functions, introduction to Laplace and Hankel transforms and description of certain basic relations, for instance for stress waves in solids. There is an extensive bibliography, containing references to both classical and recent work, and a comprehensive index. Book Description
More than six years ago, several of Rabotnov's close friends and colleagues from the USSR and USA decided to contribute a volume on Plasticity and Failure of Solids in honor of his 70th birthday. The celebration was interrupted unexpectedly by his death on May 13, 1985 at which time another decision was made still to publish the work, but as a memorial volume. As in any field of scientific endeavor, research confronts the scientists with anomalies; our chosen area is no exception. The ways in which failure criteria and plasticity theory are combined can differ widely among the researchers; they will never yield quite the same results. Each of the invited contributors has, therefore, been encouraged to express his views and to expound on his personal opinion. The contributors are free of enumeration from the authority and/or consensus of any scientific society or community. What impedes scientific process is the esoteric tradition of accepting ideas and theories by consensus among members of societies and communities. The absence of such a trend is refreshing; the collaboration between the authors from the USSR and the USA had to be one of the contributing factors. Finally, the editors wish to acknowledge the authors who have made the publication of this volume possible. a. c. Sib S. T. Mileiko AJ.
