Book Description
Modeled on the "Dictionary of American Biography, "this set stands alone but is a good complement to that set which contained only 700 women of 15,000 entries. The preparation of the first set of "Notable American Women" was supported by Radcliffe College. It includes women from 1607 to those who died before the end of 1950; only 5 women included were born after 1900. Arranged throughout the volumes alphabetically, entries are from 400 to 7,000 words and have bibliographies. There is a good introductory essay and a classified lest of entries in volume three.

Book Description
Grey Gables of Ojai is among America's most historic retirement communities. Founded in 1954 in Ojai, Calif., by Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, Grey Gables was an "experiment in living" that helped define the modern retirement lifestyle. While at Grey Gables, Andrus pioneered programs and services that included retiree health insurance, housing, senior travel, lifelong learning programs, and low-cost drugs and other senior discounts. In 1958, Grey Gables was the birthplace of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and its flagship magazine Modern Maturity. (Now called AARP The Magazine, itremains the largest circulation magazine in America.) The Grey Gables lifestyle exemplified the modern retirement lifestyle Americans inspire to today. The Dignity They Deserve tells the story of Grey Gables and its founder. It traces the journey of a true American humanitarian, Dr. Andrus, from her childhood in Chicago and her volunteer work at Jane Addams's Hull House, to her founding of Grey Gables and AARP in Ojai, to her activist work on the national level, where she worked with Congress and three different presidents to improve the lives of millions of older Americans.

Book Description
The chapters and reports in this publication have been selected from presentations at a Symposium on "Aging and Technological Advances" held in August, 1983 at the Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center of the University of Southern California. The Symposium was made possible by a grant from the NATO Special Programme Panel on Human Factors, and the support of this program is gratefully acknowledged. Members of the Symposium Advisory Board were James E. Birren, Judy Livingston, Erhard Olbrich, Victor Regnier, Pauline Robinson, Thomas Singleton, Arnold Small, Harvey Sterns, and Alvar Svanborg. Professor Lambros Houssiadas also provided invaluable encouragement. Appreciation is also extended to the Andrew Norman Institute for Advanced Study in Gerontology and Geriatrics for support of planning activities leading up to the Symposium and for support of events surrounding the Symposium itself. A generous gift from The UPS Foundation to the Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center made possible the compilation, editing and preparation of this manuscript and helped to support Symposium ac ti vi ties. We thank David Bergstone and Mary Margaret Ragan who together carefully and skillfully organized and carried out the typing of the manuscript.
