Book Description
Excerpt from Economic Determinism: Or the Economic Interpretation of History The Economic Interpretation of History proceeds by quite different methods; its purpose is simply to get at the truth and the whole truth, and the effect which it produces on the mind is exactly the oppo site from that wrought by the theological method. It is a study of the development of society, and by society is meant all the people, with their facilities for getting a living, their institutions and ideas. It has very little to do with either special events or particular individuals. An individual has no im portance at all, excepting in his relation to all the people, and then the people are the important thing; he is merely an incident. And the mainspring of growth and action is found in the nature of the people themselves, and not in any outside power. But above all, it traces the ways in which the races of men get their living, for all other developments depend upon changes and improvements in the ways of producing the food and the clothing of the race. Excerpt from The Social Interpretation of History: A Refutation of the Marxian Economic, Interpretation of History The World War has removed Socialism from the realm of academic discussion, and advanced it to first place as the momentous problem Of the day. What promise does Socialism hold out to humanity? Has it come to destroy or to build? Does it mean progress and peace or does it mean chaos and civil war? Is it a menace to civilization or is it an inevitable stage in the development of civilization? The following pages are devoted to a discussion of these fundamental questions. Book Description
Excerpt from The Development of English Thought: A Study in the Economic Interpretation of History The following pages attempt to present a theory of history through concrete illustrations. No endeavour is made, however, to relate in detail the events of any period. A knowledge of historical facts being assumed, certain salient features of each epoch will be thrown into relief, so that the main trend of events may be distinguished from the confusing maze into which the presentation of details often leads. English history has been chosen to illustrate this theory, because the conditions and circumstances isolating England for many centuries have made English thought more normal and more uniform than that of her continental neighbours. The advantages of England's insular position are too well known to need restatement; only the effects of this isolation require emphasis. It would be difficult to find another nation whose thought was so little influenced by foreign civilization as that of England from the Reformation to the middle of the present century. During all this time England had a vigorous, or at least an active, foreign policy, which, while it kept her in touch with external events, was the interest chiefly of those in court circles, or, at most, of the small aristocratic class that controlled the State and directed its policy. Although it would take volumes to narrate the story of the struggles, successes, and failures of England's foreign policy during this period, yet these events have no present interest because they affected but little the life and the thought of the people. The great mass of the people, unrepresented in Parliament, took slight interest in the topics it discussed, or the policies it pursued.
