Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995) emerged as an influential philosophical voice in the final decades of the twentieth century, and his reputation has continued to flourish and increase in our own day. His central themes--the primacy of the ethical and the core of ethics as our responsibility to and for others--speak to readers from a host of disciplines and perspectives. Kafka’s work has been attributed a universal significance and is often regarded as the ultimate witness of the human condition in the twentieth century. Yet his work is also considered paradigmatic for the expression of the singular that cannot be subsumed under any generalization. This paradox engenders questions not only concerning the meaning of the universal as it manifests itself in (and is transformed by) Kafka’s writings but also about the expression of the singular in literary fiction as it challenges the opposition between the universal and the singular. The contributions in this volume approach these questions from a variety of perspectives. POETICS OF ALTERITY Education today is commonly oriented towards citizenship and skills for life, with aims of happiness and wellbeing. But this benign image harbours surreptitious forms of control, which ultimately undermine the goods it professes to safeguard and stifle education’s very purpose. What release can there be from these constrictions? Release is to be found, as Soyoung Lee eloquently shows, by attending to elements of experience that seem to escape our grip, from challenging aspects of our moral lives to struggles over practicalities of curriculum content. Erased de Kooning Drawing ist ein Kunstwerk, das auf radikale Weise die Definition von Kunst und das Verständnis von Autorschaft herausfordert. Jasper Johns versah es anlässlich seiner ersten Präsentation mit einem Label, das maßgeblich zu seiner Wahrnehmung als eigenständigem Werk beitrug. Das zu etwas Neuem transformierte Blatt wurde in den 1950er-Jahren als Neo-Dada aufgefasst, in den 1960ern als Beginn der Konzeptkunst und in den 1980er-Jahren als Aufbruch in die Postmoderne. Zahlreiche Künstler*innen bezogen sich auf das Werk und Rauschenberg selbst griff es immer wieder auf. Es erwies sich als Testfall für Bestimmungen von Modernismus, Literalismus und Postmodernismus. Gregor Stemmrichs kenntnisreiche kunsttheoretische Betrachtung arbeitet die anhaltende Relevanz des Werks für die Theorie des Bildes, des Index, der Spur, des Allegorischen und der Frage nach Appropriation heraus.
