Book Description
Excerpt from Cancer: Its Cause and Treatment Of the great number of American physicians who annually visit the clinics of Germany, not a few have taken my diagnostic course, the fundamental principles of which are contained in this little book. May this translation renew the memories of mutual work in the minds of many of my colleagues, and add its modest share in strengthening the relations between American and German intellectual life. In this little book the rules governing the clinical diagnosis of medical cases which are in vogue in the first medical clinic of Berlin, are repeated. The same methods have characterized my didactic work since its inception. I am but returning that which I learned in my happy student days, when I add this modest little book to the offerings of homage which my esteemed chief will receive from his thankful pupils on the day of his clinical jubilee. Book Description
Excerpt from The Medical Treatment of Cancer As the journalistic reviews of my sec ond little book have been so encouraging I venture to put forth another, a third acorn, in the hopes that it may excite further interest in this most important subject, and lead others to investigate the matter and to report their experience and cases along the lines indicated. I should also be glad of just criticisms on a sci entific basis. It is not a little remarkable that during the past year or so there has been such a Singular dearth of surgical articles on cancer, as a careful search of literature shows, and so many journal articles, editorial and other, looking toward the thoughts on cancer which I have endeavored to present. It is sin cerely to be hoped that this ratio will in crease more and more, and we shall soon see a radical diminution in the death rate of cancer, which is so longed for by all. But it required more than another year's treatment before the tumour was quite gone, and during this time the changes were rung on the already mentioned remedies and some others, of which two seemed particularly of advantage, viz.: Urea (6-12) and Hecla, both of which have more than once done me good service in stubborn cases of tumours, the former particularly in gouty persons. The cure holds good, for I saw the lady quite lately and enquired. This case was rather instructive to me, more particularly from a patho-aetiological stand-point, inasmuch as eczema had preceded the tumour-formation, and when the eczema had been got rid cf by external means the uterine fibroid began to grow; moreover, after the tumour had quite gone, eczema broke out again. Quite a number of cases of tumour t/ have their" starting point in silenced cutaneous discharges; this is no vague theoretical statement, but a fact in nature which I have oft verified and...

Book Description
Excerpt from The Control of a Scourge: Or How Cancer Is Curable Opposition which burnt in many quarters during its earliest years, and to ensure for it a place among the elect of science. A different fate, a weary waiting, has dogged the slow but sure footsteps of other discoveries. Amongst these is that of the curability of cancer by surgical operation. To any who will take the trouble to study this question, to any who will look into the results of former years and compare them with the results to-day, the fact that a revolution has been in progress during the last quarter of a century in the treatment of cancer is clear. Yet the advance has been so slow, the number of cases cured by operation is so small compared with the number that die in spite of it, that it is difficult even for the medical profession, much more so for the public, to become awake to the fact of its curability. No wonder surgeons chafe under this load of lethargy; no wonder the public is full of doubt and despair! Although it may be said that, practically speaking, formerly cancer was never cured, and although it can be easily shown that of late years it has been cured over and over again, we see almost everywhere the same pessimism as formerly prevailing with regard to it, the same obstacles to the achievement of the end we have in view.
