H. Lawrence by Catherine Carswell D. H. Lawrence is best known for his novels Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love and Lady Chatterley's Lover. In these books, Lawrence explores the possibilities for life within an industrial setting. In particular Lawrence is concerned with the nature of relationships that can be had within such a setting. Though often classed as a realist, Lawrence in fact uses his characters to give form to his personal philosophy. His depiction of sexuality, though seen as shocking when his work was first published in the early 20th century, has its roots in this highly personal way of thinking and being. In his later years Lawrence developed the potentialities of the short novel form in The Ladybird, The Fox, The Captain's Doll, St Mawr, The Virgin and the Gypsy and The Escaped Cock.

Book Description
D.H. Lawrence (11th September 1885-2nd March 1930) was an English writer and poet. His works was influenced with the effects of modernity and industrialisation. His works explore issues such as sexuality, emotional health, vitality and instrict. He wrote 'The Rainbow', 'Women in Love', 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' besides 'Sons and Lovers'. The main theme of this novel 'Sons and Lovers', is 'Family Psychology, and the Oedipus complex' the story focuses that Paul thinks death would reunite him with his mother, but he doesn't commit suicide and starts living a good life and get over his mother's death. The author has focused on family relationship and it narrates the unhappy marriage between Mrs Morel and and drinking coal-miner. Paul becomes very possessive for her mother's corpse even. He doesn't allow even his neighbours to come & see her corpse. The beauty of this novel is that it may be based on the author's own experience and self. It seems as most of the matter related to the author's own early life in the midland coal-mining village of Eastwood. His father was a coal-miner with little education. In this novel the family conflicts of the Morel couple stands similar to the Lawrence couple. 'Sons & Lovers' narrates how the conflict usually takes place in such places. Its presentation is somehow very original and touchy. This novel is Lawrence's most autobiographical novel.

Book Description
Shortlisted for the James Tait Black Prize An electrifying, revelatory new biography of D. H. Lawrence, with a focus on his difficult middle years “Never trust the teller,” wrote D. H. Lawrence, “trust the tale.” Everyone who knew him told stories about Lawrence, and Lawrence told stories about everyone he knew. He also told stories about himself, again and again: a pioneer of autofiction, no writer before Lawrence had made so permeable the border between life and literature. In Burning Man: The Trials of D. H. Lawrence, acclaimed biographer Frances Wilson tells a new story about the author, focusing on his decade of superhuman writing and travel between 1915, when The Rainbow was suppressed following an obscenity trial, and 1925, when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Taking after Lawrence’s own literary model, Dante, and adopting the structure of The Divine Comedy, Burning Man is a distinctly Lawrentian book, one that pursues Lawrence around the globe and reflects his life of wild allegory. Eschewing the confines of traditional biography, it offers a triptych of lesser-known episodes drawn from lesser-known sources, including tales of Lawrence as told by his friends in letters, memoirs, and diaries. Focusing on three turning points in Lawrence’s pilgrimage (his crises in Cornwall, Italy, and New Mexico) and three central adversaries—his wife, Frieda; the writer Maurice Magnus; and his patron, Mabel Dodge Luhan—Wilson uncovers a lesser-known Lawrence, both as a writer and as a man. Strikingly original, superbly researched, and always revelatory, Burning Man is a marvel of iconoclastic biography. With flair and focus, Wilson unleashes a distinct perspective on one of history’s most beloved and infamous writers.

Book Description
Focusing on D. H. Lawrence's concept of «essential criticism», which was introduced in his posthumously published «Study of Thomas Hardy» and his statement that «every work of art adheres to some system of morality. But it must contain the essential criticism on the morality to which it adheres», this book examines the ways in which Lawrence presents his ideas in his major novels The Rainbow and Women in Love. It explores how this concept plays a crucial role in his fiction as an «other» to the implied author's messages: functioning differently, as equivocation and creative strife, respectively, in The Rainbow and Women in Love, the concept helps to make these novels more dynamic that commonly realized.
