Book Description
Approaching depression as a complex disorder with many different facets rather than all-or-nothing. Depression confuses the mind, strips away hope, and causes people to blame themselves for an illness they never asked for. This book presents a revolutionary new understanding of the concept of depression and offers readers skills and strategies to manage it. No longer is this a one-size-fits-all diagnosis, and antidepressants are no longer the one-size-fits-all treatment. Mood disorders are now seen to form a spectrum of problems, from common depression on one end to full bipolar disorder on the other. In between these extremes are multitudes of people who are on the middle of the mood spectrum, and this book is for them. The first part of the book helps readers answer the question, “Where am I on the mood spectrum?” By laying the foundation for understanding this spectrum, Aiken and Phelps highlight the key distinctions that define unipolarity, bipolarity, hypomania, mania, and depression. Readers will be able to discern which definition best fits their experience, and use this understanding to learn which treatment methods will work best. The authors also empower readers to look beyond antidepressants. They walk readers through new medications for the mood spectrum, and offer a guide to non-medication treatments that anyone can use on their own, from diet and lifestyle changes to natural supplements. The book also discusses other innovative technologies that can aid in recovery, including dawn simulators, mood apps, and blue-light filters. This thoughtful and beneficial book will offer readers skills and strategies, as well as hope, in the face of debilitating mental challenges.

Book Description
Everyone experiences the "blues" now and then as well as times of joy and self-confidence. Most people even experience mood swings—times when they move quickly from feelings like joy to opposite feelings like sorrow. But what happens when normal moods become so extreme that a person can't think, feel, or act appropriately? What if a person is so "up" he does foolish, even dangerous, things? What if he's so "down" he can barely get out of bed? The U.S. Surgeon General reports that, at any one time, between 10 and 15 percent of the adolescent population in the United States suffers from major depression. That's one in ten teens! According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 20 to 40 percent of those will develop bipolar disorder (manic depression) within five years. Often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, mood disorders present major challenges, such as increased risk for illness, higher probability of social and interpersonal problems, and greater likelihood of substance abuse for those who suffer with them. Mood disorders, when left untreated, can even be fatal: seven percent of adolescents with major depressive disorder commit suicide. What are mood disorders, and how can they be treated? Using numerous case studies and sidebars, and written in language that is easy to understand, Mood Disorders takes a comprehensive look at the causes and symptoms of mood disorders. In its pages, you will learn about the methods for diagnosis and treatment, specific drugs used to treat mood disorders, and alternative treatment strategies. Along the way, you will discover that mood disorders, though serious and challenging, are treatable, and help can be found.

Book Description
What is bipolar disorder? Bipolar disorder also commonly referred to as the manic depressive disorder, is a brain illness that is associated with abnormal mood swings, activity and energy levels as well as the ability of the affected person to perform normal daily activities. It can range from the lows of depression to the highs of obsession. As a result of the depression one may lose pleasure or interest in a lot of the activities and end up hopeless or sad. Whereas your mood may swing into obsession one may fell full of energy or euphoric. The symptoms of this condition are severe, and are quite different from the normal mood swings you undergo through from time to time. These symptoms may result to poor performance in the work place, poor performance in school, suicide or damage your relationship. However, it is important to note that bipolar disease can be treated and those suffering from it may regain their normal productive lives. This condition is very common in early adults and late teens. Although some people develop early signs during their childhood many develop its signs late in their life. Symptoms of bipolar disorder People suffering from this disorder often experience abnormal severe emotional states periodically. One may experience a joyful period for sometimes and later the mood may change to a depression or an obsession period. Another common symptom is the severe changes in activity, behavior, sleep or energy levels that are associate with the mood swings. If you suffer from this condition you may experience periods of hopelessness, loss on pleasure and interest in different activities including sex. Other behavioral changes that are common include irritability, restlessness, poor concentration, poor memory; thinking about death, problems sleeping and one is easily distracted. Test For Bipolar Disorder The first step during test is a physical examination conducted by talking to a doctor, it involves an interview as well as laboratory tests. This disorder cannot be identified through a brain scan or a mere blood test, however, these test are essential in ruling out other causing factors such as brain tumor or stroke. If bipolar disorder is not caused by other illnesses then the physician may conduct a mental health examination. The doctor checks on any bipolar disorder history in the patient's family line. The test has to be conclusive to avoid mistaking it for the common unipolar disorder which is a major depressive disorder where the affected don't experience obsession. Treatment Of Bipolar Disorder Currently there is no cure for this condition; however different treatments are administered to help those suffering from this condition to gain much better control of their mood changes as well as the related symptoms. Bipolar disorder is long term and recurrent therefore an efficient maintenance treatment plan should be used. This treatment plan involves psychotherapy and other medication is essential in preventing relapse as well as minimizing the severity of its symptoms. Since different people respond differently to medication then different medications may be used to treat this condition. Among these medications include mood stabilizers, lithium, valporic acid as well as other anticonvulsant medications.

Book Description
The lifetime risk of developing bipolar II disorder is 5-7%, yet the condition is often poorly detected. Mood elevation states are less extreme than in bipolar I disorder although the depressive episodes are usually severe. When correctly treated, the outcome is positive, but bipolar II is often poorly managed, resulting in a high suicide rate. This is the only academic and clinical management review focused entirely on bipolar II, scrutinizing history, epidemiology, burden and neurobiology and including an extensive clinical debate by international experts about effective management strategies. Now in its third edition, this book features new chapters on the limitations to clinical treatment trials and perinatal management nuances. Book Description
Mental Illness like all other illnesses can be treated and if not cured then it certainly can be managed. In BOOK ONE, Dealing with Bipolar Disorder, we will look at one of the most misunderstood illnesses Bipolar Disorder. Back during the dark days of mental health, this illness was looked upon as madness. The sometimes violent and dangerous mood swings were not considered something that occurred due to something as easily treated as a chemical imbalance, but something that could not be treated and or cured at all. Luckily for all involved, we now understand this serious form of mental illness. In BOOK TWO, Depression Dealing with Depression, we will explore the causes and treatments for Depression. Mental health issues are perhaps the most overlooked medical condition that affects the average person and you cannot overcome this problem until you learn to first recognize it. In this book, you will learn the signs of these mental illnesses, the possible causes, and treatments. You can find help for yourself and or for those whom you care for. Most people believe that Stress is normal and cannot do any long-term harm. Stress can kill you if you overlook it and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can go undiagnosed for years. It can do damage to your body and finances in ways that you are totally unaware of. Dealing with Stress is perhaps the most important thing that you will ever do. Book 3 Stress -Dealing with Stress will offer you a comprehensive overview of what stress is and how to deal with it both in terms of its effect biologically, chemically and emotionally. The thing about stress it that it is perhaps the number one cause of other mental illnesses such as Depression and PTSD. It can do tremendous damage to your physical health as well. Stress can lead to weight gain or serious weight loss. Stress can cause heart attacks and strokes. If you do not learn how to manage and to deal with stress it can kill you. The good news is that stress can be managed with medication, exercise and simple activates that you will be introduced to in my book Stress, Dealing With Stress. Book 4 Dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD There was a time not so long ago when someone suffered a great trauma or a tragic event the sufferer was expected to get over it. The idea that real and lasting damage had been done was dismissed. Soldiers who suffered from what was called battle fatigue were called cowards and those who did not quickly get over a loss or a serious trauma were considered weak. Since then we have learned to call this and so much more post-traumatic stress disorder, that mental injuries are as real as physical ones. In this book, I hope to explore the common types of this disorder. How to recognize it in yourself and others and the road back from it. I suffered through many years of nightmares and flashbacks before discovering that this was not normal, that I was suffering from this ailment. I found a way to deal with my PTSD and hopefully you will too.
