Book Description
Synopsis: Senda and the Whispering Sea Shells “Don’t talk to strangers,” Senda says to herself as she walks the streets of Santa Cruz, California, otherwise known as Weird City – a good name for the place where she was born. After all, she, with her illness, is among the weirdest. What Senda never imagined was that she would find her life turned upside down, where she becomes the main character in an unbelievable adventure in an apocalyptic world. Here, Senda will have to face her greatest fears. The night it all started, as she walked aimlessly down the strangest ocean-side walkway in California, began when a homeless man gave her a sea shell. A sudden earthquake (if they aren’t all sudden, this one surely was), and Senda found herself splashing helplessly in the waves. Everything that followed seemed like a dream, with spirit animals, Native American Ohlones, the fall of civilization, and the inexplicable senility of the adults. This tale of frightening adventures runs from the escarpments of the Pacific Ocean to the grand and mystical Redwood Forests of California. What if humanity’s destiny really was in your hands? What would you do? What would you be willing to sacrifice to save people that never showed any interest in you or your problems? Follow along with Senda in her journey and discover the talking sea shells, find what causes the strange behavior of the adults, hear about the incredible history of the Ohlone children, travel back to the pirates and conquistadors of the Old World, uncover the identity of those mysterious men hidden behind space-men-like masks, and especially, be part of the most advanced scientific breakthrough that neither Jules Vern nor Elon Musk could have predicted. Now translated from the original Spanish by ecologist and conservationist James J. Roper, Ph.D. (who also enjoys good adventure), this second novel by H. de Mendoza is a magical story of preadolescent friendship and adve

Book Description
Covering the 1960s and 1970s, this volume explores new ways of investigating, comparing and interpreting the different domains of design culture across the Nordic countries. Challenging the traditional narrative, this volume argues that the roots of the most prominent features of Nordic design’s contemporary significance are not to be found amongst the objects for the home collectively branded as ‘Scandinavian Design’ to great acclaim in the 1950s, but in the discourses, institutions and practices formed in the aftermath of that oft-told success story, during the turbulent period between 1960 and 1980. This is achieved by employing multidisciplinary approaches to connect the domains of industrial production, marketing, consumption, public institutions, design educations, trade journals as well as public debates and civic initiatives forming a design culture. This book makes a significant contribution to current, international agendas of historiographical critique focusing on transnational relations and the deconstruction of national design histories. This book will be of interest to scholars in design, design history and Scandinavian studies.

Book Description
THE SUBTITLE OF THIS SIXTH AND FINAL VOLUME of The Vincentians, “Internationalization and Aggiornamento (1919–1980),” describes the growth and change of the Congregation of the Mission in the twentieth century. Formerly European in focus, the provinces of the Congregation gained their own voice. Membership in mission lands, such as China, Brazil, and Ethiopia, surged, as local vocations joined their European confreres. The same is true of maturing provinces elsewhere. St. Vincent de Paul’s congregation became internationalized in both outreach and membership. The Vincentians in these recent decades also tasted the bitterness of persecution. The Congregation was suppressed at various times in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Its members often reacted by moving elsewhere, thus furthering the internationalization of the Vincentian charism. Under the Nazis and Communist regimes, many suffered imprisonment, torture, and death. The provinces of Central Europe (Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland), to say nothing of China, were particularly hard-hit. Updating (aggiornamento) was the watchword toward the close of this period. As society changed, so did the Church, and with it the Vincentians. The process was difficult and painful, but it moved the Congregation in directions originally laid down by the Founder. Increasingly, the members emphasized mutual cooperation with many Vincentian-inspired lay organizations, the Vincentian Family. The inspiration shared among them all has been a further manifestation of the compelling insights of St. Vincent de Paul.
