My Father, James Scarlett, first Lord Abinger, began too late in life to compose his autobiography. At the time of his death the narrative embraced only his youthful days, and the commencement of his career at the Bar. He alludes in it to his subsequent success, but the fragment I now venture to publish, as a filial tribute to his memory, fails to do him justice. So far as it goes it will, I hope, not be found uninteresting, and I will endeavour to add some extracts from his correspondence at various periods, and from his speeches which may serve to revive the recollection of a distinguished man, not yet wholly forgotten. My own professional engagements in the Diplomatic Service obliged me to leave England at an early age, thus depriving me of opportunities I might otherwise have had of personally observing and appreciating the talents and ability which rendered my father so conspicuous in Westminster Hall. Had I followed the profession of the Law, for which I was at one time intended, I might myself have undertaken to complete the history of his life, a task for which I am now incompetent. I regret this the more, as his own MS. does not include the most important period of his career, which was after he entered Parliament.
