History of the National League: 1876-1900
Author: Brian Aldridge
Publisher: Classic Sports Journal
ISBN:
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 31
Book Description
The newly formed NL was strong enough to defeat competition from 3 other leagues but was also guilty of codifying two ills: creation of the reserve clause which bound a player to 1 team, and barred blacks from play. The senior league underwent a host of rule changes (balls, strikes, distance from pitcher's mound to home plate), but ill-tempered players, riotous fans, and corrupt owners made the former Western League (now known as the American League) an attractive option in 1901.

History of the Chicago Cubs 1876-1900
Author: Brian Aldridge
Publisher: Classic Sports Journal
ISBN:
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 67
Book Description
The Chicago Cubs might not be the oldest team in MLB history (that honor belongs to the Cincinnati Reds) but they have a long, long history and an equally long, long story to tell. This team was first known as the White Stockings, and they dominated the field often during the first quarter century. They also included Adrian "Cap" Anson, star batter and 1B who was instrumental banning blacks from playing. This played in quaint parks where left field was just 180' away, and they also played ball on the city's south side! Note this: Babe Ruth's 29 HRs in 1919 broke the previous HR mark of 27 set by a Cubs (whoops, White Stockings!) infielder in 1884. Now that was an odd year: pitchers were finally allowed to throw the ball overhand, the owners instituted a salary cap, and 6 balls was a walk. By the way, the club's previous record for HRs in a season was four. So read on and enjoy!

President-Making in the Gilded Age
Author: Stan M. Haynes
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476663122
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 307
Book Description
Nominating conventions were the highlight of presidential elections in the Gilded Age, an era when there were no primaries, no debates and nominees did little active campaigning. Unlike modern conventions, the outcomes were not so seemingly predetermined. Historians consider the late 19th century an era of political corruption, when party bosses controlled the conventions and chose the nominees. Yet the candidates nominated by both Republicans and Democrats during this period won despite the opposition of the bosses, and were opposed by them once in office. This book analyzes the pageantry, drama, speeches, strategies, platforms, deal-making and often surprising outcomes of the presidential nominating conventions of the Gilded Age, debunking many wildely-held beliefs about politics in a much-maligned era.
